DIY Marquee Symbol or Letter

I have been wanting to try this project for so long.  I love the marquee letters you can buy at Restoration Hardware child/baby but they are quite pricey for this girl.  Last week I posted a video on my YouTube channel showing a Michael's "haul".  I purchased all kinds of initial letters in various sizes, shapes, and material.  I also purchased supplies to make a few letters.
The process to make these letters or symbols is easy but has several steps that take a little bit of time.  The time is so well spent though.  I love my letter and my hash tag so much they made me squeal!

ITEMS NEEDED FOR THIS PROJECT:

  • Foam Board:  You can get these a ton of different stores.  Look for them with poster board.  Wal-Mart sells them for under $2.  I purchased the 20X30 size board.
  • Poster Board:  I used one whole board for each letter I made.  I recommend you feel the board and make sure you are buying a better quality board.  Some are thinner and don't work as nicely.  My favorite is think and glossy on one side and matte on the other.
  • Spray Paint:  I used a metallic silver because I wanted mine to look like metal.  But you can make your letter any color! I would recommend you make it to compliment or match the room its going in.
  • Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
  • Drill:  This is to drill holes for the lights.  If you don't want to make your letter light up you don't need a drill.  If you don't have access to a drill you can poke the holes manually by starting with something like a pencil and then move to a larger utensil to get holes large enough for your light socket.  I used a butter knife to make holes larger enough.  Simply spin it around to carve out a round shape.  Be careful! If you are a child make sure to ask mom what she prefers.
  • Lights:  I used the globe lights from Target.  These are sold at lots of stores especially around Summer and then Christmas.  They are used as outdoor lights for deck umbrellas and as Christmas tree lights.  A box is usually around $10.  Check stores like Wal Mart, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, JoAnn, Target, or Home Improvement stores that carry outdoor furniture.
  • Misc:  Ruler, pencil, xacto knife, scissors, and black craft paint & brush.
